So You're Interested in a Fireplace? Where to Start...

Many times, a customer will come into our showroom with an intetest in buying a fireplace without knowing what it is they’re actually looking for.  This post is intended to help educate and prepare a potential buyer about their available options and some of the things our comfort advisors will need in order to help with selecting and pricing the proper unit for your home.

What fuel type will you use?
– Wood
– Pellet
– Natural Gas
– Propane

A direct vent fireplace does not require an existing masonry fireplace and can be vented out the sidewall.

What type of unit are you looking for?
– Fireplace Insert:  Specially engineered, sealed fireplace that slips into an existing masonry or pre-fab fireplace.
– Fireplace: Does not require an existing masonry fireplace or chimney and can be direct vented out the sidewall. Does require some sort of framing or cabinet to conceal the fire box.
– Stove: Standalone appliance can be set along a wall or in a corner and vented through the roof, wall or an existing chimney using code approved chimney pipe and wall thimble. Does require a non-combustible surface or hearth pad.
– Logs: Available in vented or ventless models, a log set is placed in an existing masonry fireplace to give the appearance and heat of a real fire with the convenience of gas.

Do you have an existing masonry fireplace?
– If yes, you are probably more interested in a gas logs or fireplace insert to go in it.  If not, a traditional fireplace or stove may make more sense as they don’t require a masonry fireplace for venting.

What are the dimensions of your existing room and fireplace?
– These are probably the most important pieces of information you can provide our comfort advisors so they can properly size and select a unit for your home.

 – Click on the image below for an example of the dimensions we’ll need to properly select an insert for your existing masonry fireplace.
